Discovering My Voice in Photography

Your first 10,000 photographs will be your worst; a quote famously attributed to Henri Cartier-Bresson. A daunting prediction that, even in this age of technology where reaching 10,000 images is quicker than ever, still resonates profoundly. For me, it wasn't about perfecting the technique as much as it was about discovering my own voice in photography. What was the story I yearned to tell with my images?

What was it that I truly sought in photography?

"A photograph is not just an image, but a reflection of a moment shared, a story told, and a connection formed."

In the beginning, my images were brimming with glamour, reflecting a polished exterior that everyone admired. However, upon closer inspection, I could sense a void in my work. I was taking pictures but was I truly telling a story? Reflecting on my journey, I realised that it was the deep connections I formed with the ferryman on the Yamuna river, with Kadek amidst the rice fields of Bali, that led to authentic and impacting portraits. I realised that it was not just about the image but the stories behind them, the connection I shared with the people I photographed. That was the day my perspective shifted, evolving from purely creating aesthetic imagery to focusing on authenticity and connection.

A daunting prediction that still resonates deeply, even in this technological age when reaching 10,000 images is quicker than ever. For me, it was less about perfecting technique than about discovering my own voice in photography. What was the story I wanted to tell through my images?

What was I really looking for in photography?

“A photograph is not just an image, but the reflection of a shared moment, a story told, and a connection made.”

In the beginning, my images were full of glamour, reflecting a polished surface that everyone admired. Looking more closely, however, I felt an emptiness in my work. I was taking photographs, but was I really telling a story? Reflecting on my journey, I realised that the deep connections I had formed with the ferryman on the Yamuna River and with Kadek among Bali's rice fields were what led to authentic and powerful portraits. I realised that it was not just about the image, but the stories behind it and the connection I shared with the people I photographed. That was the day my perspective changed, moving from simply creating aesthetic images towards a focus on authenticity and connection.

I listen, I connect.

Creating a portrait is not an instant process for me.

I listen, I connect, I wait for the right moment. I invest time in building a deep, meaningful conversation with the people I am going to photograph. Only once a connection has been established, once the person begins to open up, do I start photographing. My creative process is not simply about capturing a face, but the essence of the person and the stories their expressions tell. This ethos is vividly reflected in my storytelling series such as “Inked Declarations”, “The Moments”, and “Caithy's World”. These series are not just collections of images, but bodies of work that resonate with authenticity, presence, and stories worth telling.

A crucial part of my creative process is how I seek inspiration. We live in an era dominated by social media, where content is consumed in bulk and often fleetingly. I believe that to truly appreciate a photograph and understand the story behind it, we need to look beyond digital screens. Prints, books, and offline images offer an intimate interaction with a photograph, allowing for a deeper analysis and understanding of the story it tells.

I am more committed to my path than ever.

The path has changed since I first started, reflecting not only my growth as a photographer or artist, but also as an individual. Deeper, more meaningful, and less drawn to the fleeting distractions of everyday life, my approach to photography is a testament to my monochrome attitude. It is about finding those decisive moments, creating stories worth telling, and ultimately connecting with the authentic beauty of the world around us. After all, photography for me is not a competition, but a journey of discovery, a search for my own voice in this vivid world of images.

Perfection is not the goal; authenticity is, depth is.

There is always something new to learn, and I know I will never fully arrive. It is a journey I am undertaking, one that will remain a search for my decisive moment for as long as I live. The path may seem daunting at first, but as I have learned, every step taken in authenticity is a step closer to finding your own voice in photography.
